8th Birthday Letter for My Son

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

Every year, for my son's birthday, one of my favorite traditions to uphold and gifts to give my son is a birthday letter. I originally had a letter written that was nearly ready to publish when my mischievous cat hit delete. She wiped the entire post without me realizing! I was away from my computer and made the mistake of leaving it open along with leaving my office door open. Lesson learned! So here is the new letter to my son for his birthday with some printable quotes throughout the post that you're free to download.

Gifts, Motherhood, Parenting

To my dearest son on your birthday:

You are now eight and I see how you have grown wiser just this past year. I remember how nervous I was for you to start school last fall because we had so many changes happen that affected you. We moved to a new neighborhood in a different area in town, which caused you to have to move school districts and start at a new school. I know it was difficult for you and I was concerned about you adjusting, making new friends, leaving behind old friends, and liking your new home.

Mustache quotes, Motherhood, Love

You have adjusted nicely and have proved to be resilient and adaptable. You expressed yourself well to let us know you were scared but excited at the same time. You have made new friends and have learned a lot this school year.

Parenting, Dr.Seuss quotes, Education

Sports is a big part of your life now. I felt like it all happened so fast. Every sentence out of your mouth is about basketball or football. I fee like I learned the most about sports this year than I have my entire life! See? You're never too old to learn something new!

This birthday feels like a big one for me. You don't play with toys as much as you did because you would rather be outdoors playing sports. You dress like an older child, wearing athletic gear constantly. Your clothing size is a big game changer for me since now, you do have to shop in the "youth" section, and can no longer get away with shopping at the little boy's section.

Parenting, Mom, Mother Son

It's all a part of growing up, I know. But it's still bittersweet for a mama to realize. I could go on and on about how I don't want you to grow up, but for now, let's take a walk and reminisce about the past year...

Here are your favorites from the year you were SEVEN:

Favorite Food: Pizza, chicken wings (specifically from Zaxby's), hamburgers (specifically from Krystal), french toast, waffles, cinnamon buns, lumpia (Filipino eggroll), balut (duck egg)

Favorite Activities: Football, basketball, soccer, video games, Pokemon cards

Favorite Toys: You still like Transformers, Star Wars, and Lego

Favorite TV Shows: Bunk, Austin and Ally, Lab Rats, Jessie, Girl Meets World

Favorite Movies: Transformers (animated films)

Favorite clothes to wear: Anything sports-related! You enjoy looking like a football player, so you do this thing that drives me insane where you tuck in your shirt into your shorts, and you wear your football gloves all the time!

I wish I could freeze so many moments from this past year, then rewind them, and play them again. You've become so ambitious, which has become one of my favorite things about you.

You get frustrated planning out what you're going to do when you grow up, saying to me, "Mom, how do I know what I am going to do? I want to be a baker, and a football player, a store owner, and a soldier in the Army. How will I know what to do? It's so hard picking."

Parenting Quotes, Kindness, Inspiration

It is hard, but I know you'll make the right choice. Maybe not the first or second time, but you'll get there. It's all part of growing up.

Yes, I was being sneaky (and maybe a little creepy) - I went into your room while you were asleep to snap this final photo of you being seven-years-old.

I'll always be here for you. For now, you can be what you've always been: my little helper! Kidding, you are my sweet son and no matter how old you grow, you'll always be my little boy.

Happy eighth birthday, son!

Love always and forever,
