Negative Impacts of Internet Use on Kids & Tips to Reduce It

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

How much time does your child spend on the internet?  My kids are still too young to be on social media but my son is now beginning to use the internet to play games and do research whether it be school-related or for leisure.  There are plenty of positive uses for the internet but it also comes with negative impacts which is why I have set some boundaries on his online activity, when he can use the internet and for how long.  Stop Procrastinating conducted a survey about internet use among children that shows the negative effects when they spend too much time online. You can see the results in the infographic below which also includes helpful solutions to reduce the negative impact that internet use can have on children.

A new study of parents of children aged between 12 and 15 years old has found out what all parents feared - that overuse of the internet and social media affects their school work.  The study of 3000 parents by Stop Procrastinating, the productivity website, discovered that a majority of parents had found that their children were using social media and browsing the web when they should be sleeping. The resulting drop in concentration the next day at school had a marked impact on school performance.

The survey also looked into the longer term impact of children using the internet not only school work but wider developmental issues.  However, the survey also quizzed parents on what techniques and strategies they use to reduce their children’s internet use. From doing something fun from organising a digital detox week with their friends to restricting screen time an hour before bed, they survey found a lot of positive advice to share with parents.

The survey has been designed into an accessible infographic which details all the findings and help for parents who want to control and reduce their children’s internet use. You can view the infographic below:

Thank you to Stop Procrastinating for sharing this survey with us today.
Do you have set guidelines or rules for internet use for your children?  What are some tips you would include?  Please share them, I'd love to hear it!

Pass this along and share, thank you!
