I know Thanksgiving hasn't passed yet but since Christmas season is on its way, I'm happy to share with you a Christmas craft project I've been working on for a fun ornament exchange I'm participating in with a fellow blogger for the 2015 Ornament Exchange! Erlene at My Pinterventures partnered 80+ bloggers to exchange ornaments and we want to share our creations or special finds with you! Over the next 14 days, a group of ladies will be sharing our ornament tutorials or shopping trips to give you lots of holiday inspiration. I'm so excited to share this DIY ornament. You can find the full tutorial to make your own below and check out more ornaments created by several talented bloggers in the links at the bottom of this post.
I partnered with Rachel over at Craving Some Creativity. Rachel has a beautiful blog with lots of inspiring crafts and projects that you'll want to check out! Rachel let me know that she hosts Christmas in her home and has two trees set up for the holidays. I love that and wish I could put up two trees in my own home...but space is limited and two cats running around is already a bad idea for one tree! One of her trees will be decorated with birds and other woodland animals combined with rustic pieces and some gold and pearl accents. I can just imagine how beautiful that tree will be!

I am a huge fan of the rustic theme and pearls, as well, so I was super excited to create an ornament to go along with Rachel's Christmas theme.
I decided to make an ornament that captures the outdoor woodland concept she has by placing a gold bird sitting in a small pot surrounded by some Christmas nature. Hopefully, it fits with the rest of her Christmas tree decor!
How to Make a Christmas Bird Woodland Ornament
You can find many of these items at the dollar store and crafts stores.
- Tiny garden pot, preferably light weight so it doesn't weigh down the Christmas tree
- Christmas bird
- Plastic Christmas floral arrangement (take it apart to use the leaves, pine cones and berries)
- Styrofoam to place as a filler in the pot
- Toothpicks to hold leaves and stick into Styrofoam
- Small faux pearl beads
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Small Christmas bow
I used this round Styrofoam for the pot filler but you can use a small Styrofoam ball. Trace around the pot to get the correct measurement for the Styrofoam to fill inside. For this Styrofoam filler, I cut out two of these round shapes.
Secure the Styrofoam inside the pot using hot glue. I stuck a toothpick in the middle to add more security to keep them together.
Wrap twine around the pot, securing the ends with hot glue. I preferred the twine to be thicker around the pot so I double wrapped it and it helped to cover all the spaces.
Add the pearls by measuring around the pot and using hot glue to secure them.
Take apart the Christmas floral stem. Use toothpicks to place the leaves on and then stick through the Styrofoam.
Add the bird and other embellishments, securing with hot glue if necessary.
I added an extra piece of twine around the middle to help attach another long piece of twine around the sides to hang the ornament. Tie knots at each side of the pot to secure the twine that with be hanging.
If you like, attach a small, red Christmas bow to the top of the center of the twine that will hang on the tree.
This ornament is very light and won't weigh down the stem of the tree.
Have you started any Christmas projects like crafts, shopping or decorating?
