DIY Fall Recycled Bottle Decor {#TBC Crafters}

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

Easy Fall Decor Using Recycled Bottles

Now that it is September, we're getting ready for the fall season around here.  This week, my daughter and I worked on a fun, fall project together by recycling some beer bottles.  We had plenty of glitter, sequins and some fall leaves lying around the house.  We decided to reuse the bottles by dipping them in fall-colored fine glitter.  We added sequins around the neck of the bottle to add more shine and glitz!  My daughter is in love with anything that sparkles so a lot of our crafts lately include splatters of glitter!  Try out this fun project yourself and check out all the other crafts fellow bloggers worked on recently in the craft hop below.

Fall Bucket List 2015

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

Hello September!

Fall is almost here and now that September has arrived, that means cooler weather, leaves will start turning, pumpkins will be everywhere and Halloween and Thanksgiving are just around the corner!  Our family has a ton of activities we enjoy doing every year during this fall season.  Some activities we are going to try to fit in are listed below and maybe you can try them, too.

Activities to do with pumpkins:

  • Visit a pumpkin patch
  • Make a pumpkin dessert
  • Use pumpkin in a dinner recipe
  • Make pumpkin crafts
  • Carve a pumpkin
  • Decorate a pumpkin
  •  Decorate a shirt to look like a pumpkin face
Fall is a time when pumpkins pop up food, crafts, activities even on babies, children, adults and dogs!  Pumpkin costumes are everywhere.  One of the costumes my daughter likes to wear every fall when we visit the pumpkin patch is a pumpkin costume she's had for since she was a baby.  She still wore it as a top and wearing pants under it.  Unfortunately, the one in the photo below that she's been wearing year after year has now come apart.  We're just going to buy her a new one this year.

Activities to do for fall:

  • Rake leaves together
  • Have a bonfire with s'mores and hot dogs
  • Read books about fall
  • Learn more about fall and why leaves on the tree change color
  • Take fall family photos
  • Decorate the house with a fall theme
  • Trick-or-treating or trunk-or-treat
  • Attend a fall festival
  • Take pictures of leaves when they change colors

Activities to do for Thanksgiving:

  • Celebrate Thanksgiving Day
  • Thanksgiving crafts
  • Discuss what we're thankful for
  • Write Thanksgiving notes to friends/family
  • Read books about Thanksgiving

Here is a printable if you would like to print the activities out as a reminder:

What are your favorite activities to do during fall?

Have a beautiful September!

Educational Comic Book for Kids

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

"My First Start Up"

My son has been telling me that he wants to have his own business.  He says that his biggest concern right now is deciding what kind of business it should be, claiming that his problem is that he wants to do so much.  "How do you choose, Mom?  I want to have a bakery and sell toys and video games but I also like hotels so maybe I want to own a hotel."  I am so proud of him and I know I'll be proud when he gets older,  no matter what he chooses to do.  There's a lot that goes into owning a business but I'm glad he has big dreams.  I recently found out about an awesome educational comic book for kids that I know my son will love to read, called, "My First Start Up" by the creators Russell, Andrey, and David.  They each are entrepreneurs whose biggest motivation for starting this comic book is to give kids what they wished they had when they were growing up.

Walking from School Safety Tips {Mommy Cab Discussions}

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

Safety Tips for Kids

In a recent car ride, we had a Mommy Cab Discussion where I reminded my son about safety tips walking from school.  I remember when my parents moved my siblings and me to our new neighborhood (way back when I was a kid), we started going to a new elementary school that was close enough for us to be able to walk home.  At the time, both my parents worked during the day so I walked home home with my older brother and some other neighborhood children.  Our middle school was close enough, as well, to walk from so we did.  Now that I'm a parent and we just moved to a new home where the school is right next door, I'm finding myself walking from school again!  I have been walking my son everyday since he went back to school last week and it made me realize there's so many safety precautions I did not even think to warn him about for when he is a bit older and starts walking home with a group of friends.

Back to School: My 7 Year Old Teacher

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

Lessons Our Kids Teach Us

The second I wake up to the second my kids fall asleep, questions are thrown at me left and right.  Kids are curious about everything and can ask a multitude of questions in one given day.  Many of the questions don't have logical answers like when my three year old asked me, "Mommy, can I get a pink kitty?" I tell her no, explaining that there are no pink kitties, causing more questions to ensue: "Why?  Can't we go to the pet store to see?  Maybe a different pet store will have different colored kitties like a pink one. Can you look online and find me a pink kitty, a real one?"

School, Parenting, Family

There are plenty of times, however, when they ask thought-provoking questions that cause me to think and actually learn something valuable while answering them.   As many of you may know, my son had a lot of preparations to make for this school year since it's a new school for him.  During the preparations and all the discussions we have had in the past months, I realized even more how much our children really teach us...with a little help from the movie, "Inside Out."  (Don't worry, I won't give too much away if you haven't seen it yet).

Back to School Orkin Mom Prize Pack

Written by, Bernadyn Nettles

We all know that back to school isn't just an adjustment for the students but for the parents, as well.  Orkin knows one of the busiest, always-on-the-go person during these chaotic school days is Mom.  I know that's true! I feel like I'm running a constant race during the weekdays and can barely get a minute to myself!  Orkin wants to help decrease one less stress problem by taking care of any pests issues we may have in our homes.  Back to school is a great time to learn how to do that.  Check out Orkin's Household Pests 101 Blog app and take the Pest Prevention Pop Quiz to find out if you know how to think like a pest!  There is also a useful Orkin Back-To-School Prize Pack giveaway below that is perfect for busy parents on the go!
